Korail and SR merger approved; unified app 'Korail+' launches August 3

South Korea is set to unify its high-speed rail services as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has approved the merger of Korail (KTX) and SR (SRT). This integration culminates in the launch of a new, unified mobile application, 'Korail+', on August 3.

This integrated app launch is the starting point for the public to experience the benefits of high-speed rail integration first.

The new app, accessible through an update of the existing 'KorailTalk' or as a new installation, will enable passengers to book tickets for both KTX and SRT trains from a single platform. While users with existing accounts on either service will be automatically or easily transitioned, those with only an SR account will need to convert to a unified membership online. For trains operating in August, booking will remain split between the respective apps due to ticketing system constraints, but from September 1 onwards, all bookings for trains running from that date will be available on 'Korail+'.

This merger promises significant benefits for passengers. Over the next three years, high-speed rail fares will be adjusted to align with the current SRT fare levels, effectively lowering KTX prices by about 10%. Additionally, the 5% mileage accrual on payments, previously exclusive to KTX, will now be available for SRT passengers. A long-awaited SRT-general train transfer discount of 30% on general train fares will also be introduced. KTX's online special fares will be applied to SRT, and various discount programs, such as those for pregnant women and youth, will be standardized to favor passengers.

Furthermore, the number of train services will increase, with weekend services rising by 26 trips. Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Kim Hyun-mee stated that the app launch is the first step in allowing the public to experience the benefits of the high-speed rail integration, promising convenient booking, lower fares, and expanded seating. The Fair Trade Commission's approval was based on the assessment that the merger poses a low risk of restricting competition in the market, given the regulated nature of the industry and Korail's public enterprise status. The commission will monitor the implementation of the business plan for the next three years.
