Korea Cyber University Student Pursues a Career Combining IT and Social Welfare

Shin Jong-ho wants to combine information technology and social welfare in a career focused on social safety. He transferred into Korea Cyber University’s computer engineering department in the first semester of the 2025 academic year after studying business at a junior college.

Shin works in safety inspections and detailed diagnoses of regional heating facilities. He said courses in Python programming, systems programming and data communications helped him analyze large volumes of field measurements and equipment histories. He also automated repetitive data organization tasks, improving efficiency in his work.

Training in internet security and network practice helped him understand inspection and diagnostic systems and the flow of data transmission. Shin said that knowledge strengthened his ability to carry out preventive diagnoses.

He is also pursuing a double major in social welfare as South Korea prepares for a super-aged society. His goal extends beyond upgrading his own career. He wants to apply expertise in social welfare and safety management to care work and to develop a “smart care and customized safety management system for vulnerable groups.”

Shin said he chose social welfare studies to prepare for an aging society. Courses including social welfare for older people and social welfare practice have helped him understand the realities facing vulnerable groups and the country’s welfare system.

I am very satisfied that I can maintain my working life, reduce the tuition burden and complete the degree program.

He studies after work, on weekends and during commuting time through the university’s online system. He said an industry-sponsored admissions track allowed him to remain employed, reduce tuition costs and complete the degree.

Shin plans to earn an engineering degree, obtain a Level 2 social worker qualification and secure an engineer technical grade. Korea Cyber University said it will begin recruiting new students for its general graduate school and business graduate school for the 2027 academic year on Nov. 16. Employees covered by an industry-sponsored agreement can receive a 30% tuition reduction.
