Kosovo Assembly Constitution Without Presidential Agreement Could Trigger New Elections, Kurti Warns

Albin Kurti, president of the Self-Determination Movement, warned that proceeding with the constitution of the Kosovo Assembly without an agreement on the presidential election could lead to new elections. He requested additional time for political negotiations to finalize the selection of a president, which he believes is crucial for the complete formation of institutions.

Any constitution of the Assembly without an agreement on the issue of the President of the Republic would practically represent preparation for the dissolution of the assembly.

Kurti stated that any attempt to constitute the Assembly without a presidential agreement would essentially prepare for the Assembly's dissolution. He views political dialogue as the sole path to a solution and the avoidance of further elections. Since the election results were confirmed, his party has sought to allow space for political discussions, a move also requested by opposition parties after the December 28 elections.

Providing an opportunity for political dialogue is, in my opinion, the only way to reach a solution and avoid new elections.

The Democratic League of Kosovo (DSK) halted talks due to internal issues. Kurti noted that a recent conversation with DSK leader Lumir Abdixhiku indicated insufficient time for an agreement. He believes continuing discussions before proceeding with the Assembly's constitution is necessary to facilitate a potential accord and prevent new elections.

DSK suspended talks due to internal problems, and the conversation we had the night before last with President Abdixhiku showed that there was not enough time to reach an agreement.

Once an agreement on the president is reached, Kurti said the constitutive session of the Assembly will resume. He reiterated his call for talks with Bedri Hamza, leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, and Ardian Gjini of the Alliance for a New Kosovo, and confirmed that discussions with DSK would continue. The constitutive session was adjourned after the MPs took their oath; the election of the Assembly speaker and vice-speakers remains. The deadline for this process expires at midnight tomorrow.

When we reach an agreement, we will schedule the continuation of the constitutive session. When we are sure that we have done everything to avoid another unnecessary election.
