Kosovo MP Throws Eggs at Prime Minister Kurti Amid Political Crisis

Kosovo's parliament suspended its session Saturday after an opposition lawmaker threw eggs at interim Prime Minister Albin Kurti, highlighting the nation's ongoing political turmoil. This incident underscores the deep divisions plaguing Europe's youngest democracy, which has seen three elections in less than two years without stable parliamentary outcomes.

The confrontation unfolded as Kurti was engaged in sensitive negotiations with opposition parties to elect a new president. Lawmaker Time Kadrijaj targeted Kurti with eggs as he attempted to delay a critical vote. Security personnel quickly intervened to protect the prime minister, while the live broadcast was halted.

Despite the disruption, Kurti remained composed, declaring his willingness to accept such disruptions as the "price" for dialogue. However, the session could not continue, further deepening the political uncertainty. Kurti's Vetevendosje (VV) party won the last legislative elections but requires a two-thirds majority to elect a president, necessitating cross-party cooperation that has thus far proven elusive.

The country's political instability has intensified since Friday, when the constitutional deadline for forming a parliament expired. Several lawmakers are reportedly considering legal action following Kurti's request for an extension to continue negotiations, signaling a potential escalation of the constitutional crisis.
