Kosovo PM Kurti egged in parliament amid political crisis

A session of Kosovo's parliament was abruptly suspended Saturday when an opposition lawmaker hurled eggs at caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti. Time Kadrijaj of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) party shouted "Shame on you!" before throwing the eggs.

Kurti responded calmly, stating he was "happy to pay this price" if it meant pursuing dialogue. This incident highlights the deep political divisions and tensions within Kosovo's government. Kurti's own Vetevendosje (VV) party has a history of parliamentary disruptions, including using tear gas in 2018 and 2015.

The confrontation took place as Kurti is engaged in difficult negotiations to elect a new president. His VV party, despite maintaining a parliamentary majority with ethnic minority allies after a June snap election, falls short of the two-thirds majority required to elect a president. A constitutional deadline to elect a speaker of parliament expired Friday, and opposition parties have threatened legal action over Kurti's requests for more negotiation time.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, a move recognized by over half the world's countries but still contested by Belgrade. The nation has experienced significant political instability, holding three elections in just over two years.
