Koubek resigns as Czech Republic coach after World Cup "failure"

Miroslav Koubek is set to leave his position as head coach of the Czech Republic national football team, following an agreement with the Czech Football Federation to terminate his contract. The decision comes after the team's disappointing performance at the World Cup, which Koubek described as a "failure."

The veteran coach, who led the Czech Republic to their first World Cup finals in twenty years, will end his tenure after the team failed to secure a single victory in the tournament. Their campaign included a 2-1 loss to South Korea, a 3-0 defeat against Mexico, and a 1-1 draw with South Africa.

Koubek, who took charge in December 2025, stated that he assumes his share of responsibility for the World Cup outcome. However, he also pointed to what he called "media campaigns" as a reason for his departure. He claimed these campaigns were based on "half-truths and fabrications" against him, making his continued work for the national team feel pointless.

The federation president, David Trunda, has accepted Koubek's proposal to end the contract, which was originally set to run until June 2028. The team's swift elimination from the World Cup has significantly impacted the perception of the experienced coach.
