Kraft Hockeyville-winning town of Taber reopens ice rink after 2025 explosion

The community of Taber, Alberta, celebrated the reopening of its sole ice arena on Friday, marking a significant milestone eight months after a devastating explosion. The blast, which occurred just days before Christmas in 2025, severely damaged the facility, leaving the town without its primary winter sports hub.

Dec. 17 was a difficult day for all around our community and the area.

An explosion ignited by a spark from a propane leak in the Zamboni room rocked the arena on December 17, 2025. While no one was injured, the blast caused extensive damage, including destroyed walls and the exterior Zamboni door being thrown across the parking lot. The building also houses the community's curling center.

Originally, we were quoted a $10.8 million repair cost. Most of that would have been covered by insurance, but $4.3 million was not covered.

Taber's path to reopening was significantly aided by winning the Kraft Hockeyville 2026 competition. This victory brought in $300,000, contributing to the multi-million dollar repair costs. The town faced an estimated $10.8 million in repair costs, with $4.3 million not covered by insurance.
