Krakatau Steel Promotes Watershed Reforestation With 250 Employees

Krakatau Steel used its 56th anniversary to direct attention beyond the factory gates, combining watershed reforestation with a cleanup at Cilegon’s Great Mosque. The company donated productive tree seedlings, saying they could support environmental conservation, disaster mitigation and food security over the longer term.

The cleanup involved 250 Krakatau Steel employees. The company also handed over 37 large-capacity waste bins and distributed 950 free lunch packages to local residents.

The activities form part of the steelmaker’s broader social and environmental presence in Cilegon and Banten, where industrial operations have continued for more than half a century. Chief Executive Akbar Djohan said the program showed how the company was trying to connect industrial activity with the social and environmental needs of the communities where it operates.

Over the past three years, Krakatau Steel Group has allocated about 17 billion rupiah to development programs in Cilegon and Banten. The funding has covered social assistance, education, environmental projects, health services and community economic development.

Education and basic services also featured in the anniversary initiatives. Through its zakat collection unit, the company provided 1.1 billion rupiah in educational assistance to 1,003 orphans and disadvantaged children, along with support for 25 people with disabilities. It had earlier awarded 100 million rupiah in scholarships to 20 orphaned and disadvantaged university students. Through its infrastructure subsidiary and group companies, it also paid 385 million rupiah in health insurance contributions for 850 Cilegon residents. “We want to ensure that Krakatau Steel Group’s presence provides benefits, blessings and added value for surrounding communities, the regional economy and even the national economy,” Akbar said.
