Krause wins steeplechase gold for Germany at European Championships

Gesa Felicitas Krause secured Germany's first gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The 34-year-old athlete from Trier triumphed over France's Alice Finot, who took silver, and her German teammate Olivia Gürth, who earned bronze.

Dramatically, Lea Meyer, who was on track for a medal, fell at the final water jump, finishing fourth. This mirrors a similar incident at the 2022 World Championships.

Krause's victory marks her third European title, adding to her wins in 2016 and 2018. For the 24-year-old Gürth, the bronze medal represents the biggest success of her career, though she was a multiple European junior champion.

The 3,000-meter steeplechase has long been a strong event for Germany in Europe. The last time Germany secured two medals in this discipline was in 2012. Krause also competed then, winning bronze. Antje Möldner-Schmidt later achieved Germany's first European title in the event in 2016, which became part of the championships in 2006.
