Kremlin does not rule out resuming trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and US

Moscow has left the door open to renewed trilateral peace talks with Ukraine and the United States, while warning that no date or venue is yet in sight.

Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Russia did not rule out returning to the format. He referred to comments from Kyiv and Jared Kushner, one of US President Donald Trump’s special envoys, as well as to Moscow’s own position.

Peskov also suggested that peace in Ukraine could be drawing closer after talks in Moscow and Kyiv with Kushner and fellow Trump envoy Steve Witkoff. “Undoubtedly, any attempts that are more or less effective represent one small step towards peace. We greatly appreciate the peacemaking efforts of the American negotiators,” he said.

The comments followed a 5 September meeting in Moscow between Putin and the US envoys. Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin told them he remained confident that Russia would achieve its war aims. The White House described the talks as substantive and said it would announce next steps in the coming weeks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said talks with Witkoff and Kushner began in Kyiv on 6 September. He said further rounds would include negotiators from France, the United Kingdom and Germany. After those discussions, Zelenskyy said the participants had addressed possible terms for ending the war, short-term support for Ukraine and new ideas for the next phase of negotiations.
