About Ukrainska Pravda

Independent Center-leftEstablished source

Ukrainska Pravda was founded in April 2000 by Heorhii Gongadze and Olena Prytula. After Gongadze's murder, Prytula led the outlet and remained its owner until May 2021, when she transferred 100% of its corporate rights and assets to Dragon Capital, an investment group led by Tomรกลก Fiala. Dragon Capital also owns NV media holding, and Fiala has publicly stated a commitment to non-interference in Ukrainska Pravda's editorial policy.

Ukrainska Pravda was established to counter state censorship and has a history of investigative journalism, with its founder Heorhii Gongadze and journalist Pavlo Sheremet both murdered for their work. Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) rates the outlet as having a left-center bias in story selection and editorial positions. In March 2022, the Institute of Mass Information (IMI) recommended Ukrainska Pravda as a reliable and trustworthy media outlet, noting high compliance with professional journalism standards, balanced viewpoints, and accuracy. However, Ukrainska Pravda reported systematic pressure from the Office of the President of Ukraine in October 2024, including communication blocks and pressure on advertisers. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has also noted increased pressure from the state or other political actors in Ukraine, though the country's press freedom ranking has seen some improvement.

Reading context

Media systems vary by law, ownership, and editorial custom. We preserve each outlet's framing and add context so readers can compare coverage without treating one country as the default.
