Ono Surono, Chairman of the West Java branch of the PDI Perjuangan party, has called on party members to commemorate the July 27, 1996 incident, known as Kudatuli, as a pivotal moment to reinforce their commitment to democracy and champion the interests of the people. The call came during a commemoration event in Bandung, themed "Remembering the Wounds, Guarding Democracy."

Surono stressed that the 1996 event serves as a crucial reminder that democracy must be continuously protected to prevent the resurgence of authoritarian practices. He highlighted freedom of opinion as a vital component of democratic life, asserting that it should not be suppressed by intimidation or violence. He further elaborated that Kudatuli should not merely be an annual historical commemoration but a reflection for all elements of the nation to remain vigilant against any form of restriction on freedom of expression. "We move forward building a better future, but we do not forget the bloody path we have traversed. We forgive the wounds that were inflicted, but we do not forget who sacrificed so we can breathe more freely today," he added.

Surono also addressed economic concerns, particularly the displacement of street vendors and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) due to evictions. He instructed PDI Perjuangan cadres across West Java to actively engage with communities, support their aspirations, and advocate against forced evictions. "I instruct all levels of PDI Perjuangan, both provincial and district/city levels, to speak to those in power currently holding executive authority. Do not let the people lose their livelihoods, do not let evictions happen everywhere," he urged.
