Kültürpark comes alive in virtual exploration

Kültürpark, a cherished landmark in İzmir, Turkey, is now accessible in the digital realm through a meticulously crafted 3D model. Developed by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, this virtual representation allows visitors to explore the park's iconic structures, monuments, sculptures, trees, and water features using their smartphones or virtual reality headsets.

The project, spearheaded by the Geographic Information Systems Branch Directorate, utilized existing maps, aerial imagery, and on-site photographs to create a detailed digital replica. Erkan Karahan, a GIS Technician, explained that the 3D model goes beyond a simple visual representation, incorporating height, width, and depth to offer an immersive experience. Users can even access information about the types of trees within the park, including their Turkish and Latin names.

This innovative digital initiative will be a highlight at the 95th İzmir International Fair. Visitors donning VR headsets at a dedicated stand will be able to navigate the virtual Kültürpark, experiencing its various sections as if they were physically present. Karahan emphasized the technology's ability to make users feel "as if they are inside that environment," providing access to information and a realistic model experience.

Beyond the technological novelty, the project serves a crucial purpose: preserving Kültürpark's historical and cultural significance for posterity. "Kültürpark is one of the most important cultural parks for İzmir," Karahan stated. "We created this model to ensure the historical area's importance is better understood and to leave a digital legacy for future generations."
