Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai has expressed deep concern following a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on July 28th. The quake, occurring at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, caused damage across multiple areas. Premier Cho immediately conveyed his sympathy to the residents of Kumamoto and pledged full support from Taiwan. He issued a statement via Facebook, advising Taiwanese citizens residing in or visiting Kumamoto and its surrounding regions to remain vigilant, prioritize their safety, and closely follow official disaster prevention information and evacuation measures issued by local authorities. The premier noted that the Japan Meteorological Agency had issued a tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas, with potential wave heights of up to one meter. However, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration assessed that the tsunami posed no threat to Taiwan, and the Pacific tsunami warning had been lifted, assuring the public of their safety. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively monitoring the situation and assisting Taiwanese nationals in Japan through its overseas missions. Additionally, Taiwan's National Fire Agency's specialized search and rescue team is on standby, ready to provide necessary humanitarian aid should Japan request it.
