KuPS Advances to Conference League Group Stage, Securing Over Three Million Euros

Kuopio Palloseura (KuPS) has secured a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage after a tense match against Ireland's Shamrock Rovers. The Finnish team won the second leg 1-0 at home, clinching the tie with a 2-1 aggregate score.

The game remained goalless for a long period, with the breakthrough finally occurring in the 75th minute. Following a set-piece situation, KuPS's Gustav Engvall headed the ball into the box, and it deflected off two Rovers players before entering the net. The own goal was officially credited to Rovers' defender Roberto Lopes.

This advancement brings substantial financial rewards for KuPS. Reaching the group stage guarantees the club 3.17 million euros, a sum that significantly surpasses their entire player budget for the current season, which stands at 1.6 million euros.

KuPS has a history of success in the Conference League, having reached the knockout stages last season and earning over 5.45 million euros in prize money. The club has participated in the Conference League since its inception in the 2021-22 season. There is a possibility of two Finnish teams featuring in the group stage, as Inter is also competing for a spot against FC Copenhagen.
