KuPS loses first leg of Champions League qualifiers to Sabah

Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) faces an uphill battle after a 1-0 defeat to Azerbaijani side Sabah in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying match. The Finnish club must now overturn the deficit in the return leg next week in Kuopio.

Sabah started the match strongly, controlling the early minutes and dominating possession. Their pressure paid off just before the end of the first half when Serbian striker Veljko Simic found the back of the net. KuPS struggled to get their passing game going during the first half, with Sabah registering 10 shots to KuPS's zero, making the one-goal deficit a somewhat flattering outcome for the visitors.

In the second half, KuPS managed to get more involved in the game and retain possession more effectively. However, they still found it difficult to create significant scoring opportunities. The return leg will be crucial for KuPS, as the winner of the tie advances to the third round of the Champions League qualifiers and secures at least a spot in the Conference League group stage.

Should KuPS overcome Sabah, they would face either Denmark's AGF Aarhus or Poland's Lech Poznan in the next round. A loss to Sabah would see KuPS drop into the Europa League third qualifying round, where they would play the loser of the match between Bulgaria's Levski Sofia and Romania's Universitea Craiova.
