Kushner's Coastal Land Sale Fuels Albanian Fears of State Treating Land as Investment Inventory

Plans for a luxury resort on Albania's largest island, Sazan, spearheaded by Jared Kushner, are fueling local discontent, with many Albanians believing the state is treating its land as mere inventory for foreign investors. This perceived transactional approach to national assets is seen as particularly egregious given the project's potential impact on the island's natural environment.

For two months, Albanians have taken to the streets to protest the planned resort by Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump. The development threatens the habitat of wild flamingos, a symbol that has become central to the largest protests in Albania since the fall of communism. Demonstrators have even erected and toppled a bust of Prime Minister Edi Rama, branding him "The Last Dictator," a gesture echoing the 1991 removal of a statue of the communist dictator Enver Hoxha.

The island is popular among explorers who disregard warning signs.

Hajdari argues that the brand Trump is selling masks potentially corrupt, backroom deals. She claims that around 450 kilometers of pristine Albanian coastline have been divided and awarded to the highest bidders over decades, according to independent journalists and activists. As flamingos face habitat loss, protestors feel increasingly marginalized, seeing their valuable land given to wealthy foreigners while coastal prices skyrocket and wild beaches become exclusive enclaves.
