Kwankwaso Mourns Emir of Gumel

Rabiu Kwankwaso has mourned the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad-Sani II, describing the traditional ruler as a distinguished and far-sighted leader.

In a condolence message posted on his verified X account, the former Kano State governor and New Nigeria People’s Party vice-presidential candidate extended his sympathies to the emir's family, the Gumel Emirate and the people and government of Jigawa State. The monarch died at 85 on Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Egypt after spending more than 45 years on the throne.

Muhammad-Sani was born into the ruling family of the Gumel Emirate. He attended Gumel Primary School, Hadejia Middle School and Rumfa College, formerly Kano High School. He later earned public administration diplomas in Zaria and studied political science and international relations at Ohio University in the United States.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmad Muhammad Sani II.

He began working with the Gumel Native Authority before joining the Nigeria Immigration Service in 1964. He later entered public administration and served as a senior official in the Kazaure Divisional Office. He contested a Senate seat in 1978 under the Great Nigeria People’s Party but was unsuccessful.

After an alliance between the GNPP and the People’s Redemption Party, he served as commissioner for information, internal affairs and culture in the old Kano State from 1978 to 1980. During that period, he helped establish The Triumph newspaper and CTV67 television station, now ARTV, and expand Radio Kano. His political career ended after his father's death on Dec. 13, 1980, when he succeeded him as Emir of Gumel.
