Kwara community celebrates return of abducted worshippers amid grief for those lost

The Omugo community in Kwara State, Nigeria, is experiencing a complex mix of relief and sorrow following the return of three abducted worshippers. The women, who were among eight taken from the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) on March 22, 2026, regained their freedom after 105 days. Their release came after a coordinated security offensive targeting suspected kidnappers in the Kwara-Kogi border forests.

With grateful hearts, we give all glory to Almighty God because the three remaining mothers in captivity have finally regained their freedom and have been reunited with their families.

However, the joy of the survivors' return is tempered by the tragic loss of five other worshippers who died while in captivity. Oladimeji Thompson, President of the Omugo Development Union, described the situation as a moment of "mixed emotions," highlighting the community's gratitude for the survivors' freedom alongside their deep grief for the deceased.

For 105 painful days, our community lived in fear, anxiety, uncertainty and unceasing prayers. Yet, we never gave up hope.

He praised the resilience of the community, noting their unwavering hope and unity during the ordeal. The union leader also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the five who lost their lives, emphasizing that their deaths would not be forgotten.

Even as we celebrate this joyful reunion, our hearts remain heavy with grief as we remember the five precious worshippers who lost their lives in the kidnappers’ den.

The successful rescue operation involved multiple security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the Armed Forces, alongside local vigilante groups. Thompson expressed sincere appreciation for the efforts of all involved, acknowledging their courage and professionalism in securing the captives' release. The community also recognized the support from various levels of government.
