  • The operation targeted unregistered vehicles and those with covered, defaced, or improperly affixed plates.
  • Offenders will face prosecution, and police officers involved in misconduct will be disciplined.

Enugu State Police Command has impounded 195 vehicles for violating registration and number plate regulations, according to a statement from the Command's Spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe. The state's Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Giwa, personally led the enforcement drive.

Commissioner Giwa stated that the operation enforced a nationwide ban on unregistered vehicles and those with covered, defaced, obscured, improperly affixed, unauthorized, or missing number plates. The impounded vehicles include those that are unregistered, bear non-compliant official plates, or have only one plate instead of the legally required two.

Owners of the impounded vehicles will be prosecuted in court. Giwa commended the enforcement personnel for their professionalism and reminded motorists of their legal obligations regarding vehicle registration and number plate usage. He assured that the enforcement would be sustained and offenders prosecuted.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, recently directed all state police commands to strictly enforce this ban due to security risks, the frequent use of such vehicles in criminal activities, and violations of existing regulations. The Enugu State command warned that any police officer engaging in extortion or misconduct during the exercise would face severe disciplinary action.

The impounded vehicles include those that are unregistered, bear covered, defaced, obscured, unauthorised, or improperly affixed official number plates, or have only one number plate instead of the legally required two.
