Kyrgyz youth choose volunteerism over pay, seeking experience and connections

Thousands of young people in Kyrgyzstan are opting for volunteer work, even with demanding schedules and no pay, driven by a desire for experience and valuable connections. This trend is particularly evident in the lead-up to the VI World Nomad Games, where approximately 9,000 applications were received for just 700 volunteer positions.

Bakai Kozhomkul uulu, head of the youth policy department, detailed the multi-stage selection process. Organizers meticulously reviewed applications, considering factors such as age, language skills, prior experience, and motivation. Candidates who passed this initial screening then underwent interviews to evaluate their communication abilities, resilience under pressure, and capacity to engage with diverse cultural backgrounds.

The selection process involved several stages. Initially, organizers reviewed applications, paying attention to age, knowledge of languages, experience and motivation of the candidates. Then, interviews were conducted, during which communication skills, stress resistance and readiness to work with representatives of different cultures were assessed.

Elaman Jusupov, a fourth-year international relations student and an experienced volunteer, exemplifies this commitment. He sees his volunteer work not as unpaid labor but as a strategic investment in his personal and professional future. "For me, it is first and foremost an investment in myself and my future," Jusupov stated. "I give my time and energy, and in return, I gain competencies, knowledge, new acquaintances, and opportunities."

Volunteers like Jusupov will be tasked with significant responsibilities, including meeting and accompanying participants, coordinating transportation, and ensuring smooth logistical operations. While the work demands long hours, often from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the Games, the benefits of gaining practical experience, expanding their networks, and contributing to a major international event are seen as outweighing the lack of financial compensation. The organizers provide essential support, including accommodation, meals, transport, uniforms, and equipment, further facilitating the volunteers' experience.
