Kyrgyzstan: 1.2 Million Som Raised for Fire-Stricken Family in Four Hours

A swift outpouring of support saw Kyrgyz citizens raise 1.2 million som (approximately $13,500 USD) in just four hours for a family devastated by a house fire. The blaze destroyed their rented home and spread to four neighboring houses in Bishkek.

The fire reportedly began when a daughter, who had recently finished 11th grade, was cooking corn outside. Believing the fire was out, she went inside, but strong winds fanned sparks from the cooking area into a nearby woodpile. The fire quickly escalated due to the large amount of firewood present.

The daughter decided that the fire had already gone out and went into the house, but due to the strong wind, sparks flew out of the hearth.

The affected family faces severe hardship, with four members having disabilities, including two children. The family's primary income came from their younger children. A son collects plastic crates for sale, while the daughter, after finishing school, sold boiled corn. The head of the family was reportedly too distraught to speak about the incident.

Following the fire, neighbors appealed to Zhanysh Narynbayev, founder of the "Berenshen" charity center, for assistance. Narynbayev shared the family's plight in a widely circulated social media video, which spurred the rapid fundraising effort.
