Kyrgyzstan and Russia to Establish Infectious Disease Research Center

Kyrgyzstan and Russia are beginning construction of a scientific center for infectious disease research, in a move their epidemiologists describe as technological cooperation.

Anna Popova, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being, said the center would help identify hidden epidemiological threats. She spoke in Bishkek, according to 24.kg.

Popova linked the need for cooperation to the movement of people and goods between the two countries. Many people travel from Russia to Kyrgyzstan and from Kyrgyzstan to Russia, while trade also crosses the border. Those flows, she said, create risks for the spread of infections.

Popova added that Russia and Kyrgyzstan have carried out more than 10 projects aimed at protecting the health of the Kyrgyz population as a friendly state.
