Kyrgyzstan Records 348 Mudslides in Six Months, Eight Dead

Kyrgyzstan experienced a dramatic surge in mudslides during the first six months of 2026, with 348 incidents recorded, primarily in the southern regions. This represents a fivefold increase compared to the same period in 2025, when only around 70 cases were registered.

The destructive power of these mudslides led to significant damage across the country. A total of 2,484 structures were affected, including approximately 180 residential homes, over 100 kilometers of roads, 45 bridges, and 55 electricity pylons. The preliminary material damage is estimated at a staggering 399.9 million Kyrgyzstani som.

The number of mudslide events this year has significantly increased compared to the same period last year.

The human toll was also severe, with eight fatalities and three individuals sustaining injuries. In response to the danger, 236 residents were evacuated from their homes in hazardous zones. Officials classify mudflows based on water volume, with most of this year's events falling into the fourth degree of danger (less than 10 cubic meters per second), though some second-degree flows were also recorded.
