Kyrgyzstan Transport Sector Sees Strong Growth in Q1 2026

Kyrgyzstan's transportation sector is experiencing robust growth, with both freight and passenger volumes showing significant increases in the first quarter of 2026. The National Statistical Committee reported a 7.8% rise in freight transport, reaching over 14.3 million tons, and a 6.9% increase in passenger traffic, with nearly 176 million people utilizing various modes of transport.

Buses and minibuses remain the dominant choice for passengers, carrying over 164 million people, a 7.4% increase from the previous year. Taxis also saw a 3.9% rise, transporting over 9.6 million passengers. These figures underscore the continued reliance on road-based transport for daily commutes and travel within the country.

A particularly noteworthy trend is the dramatic 37.3% surge in railway passenger numbers, reaching over 90,000. This indicates a successful development of domestic rail routes and a growing preference for train travel. In contrast, trolleybus usage plummeted by 19%, a decline attributed to the phasing out of these vehicles in Bishkek and their replacement with electric and gas buses. This shift highlights the ongoing modernization of public transport infrastructure.

In terms of freight, road transport continues to lead, carrying over 11.5 million tons. However, postal and courier services demonstrated the most impressive growth, with a 25.2% increase in service volume, reaching over 734 million som. This surge points to the burgeoning e-commerce sector and the increasing demand for efficient delivery services within Kyrgyzstan. The overall positive performance across multiple transport sectors suggests a dynamic and evolving transportation landscape in the country.
