LA Anime Expo Overcrowding Halts Entry, Fans Face Long Queues

The Los Angeles Anime Expo, a major celebration of Japanese pop culture, faced significant overcrowding on its second day, July 3. The Los Angeles Convention Center reportedly reached its capacity, leading security to temporarily suspend fan entry. This resulted in extensive queues forming outside the venue, with some attendees expressing frustration at being unable to enter.

Social media posts depicted long lines snaking around the convention center and packed hallways within the venue. One X user reported, "The fire marshal said the expo is full, they aren't letting us in." The user later updated that entry resumed after about 20 minutes. Concerns were raised by some attendees about the potential for crowd-related incidents, such as stampedes or crushes, given the sheer volume of people.

Despite the entry delays, the expo attracted cosplayers from around the world, showcasing elaborate costumes inspired by popular characters from series like "Chainsaw Man" and "Naruto." The event also featured scheduled cosplay gatherings throughout the weekend. Earlier on the day of the overcrowding, a large police presence monitored an unofficial late-night gathering by attendees outside the convention center, which the LAPD stated was standard procedure due to the unexpectedly large crowd.

The Anime Expo, which drew over 410,000 attendees last year, is a significant event for fans. While the overcrowding caused temporary disruptions, the event continued with its planned programming, including various fan meetups and exhibitions.
