La Liga: Mbappe misses penalty as Betis beat Real Madrid 1-0

Kylian Mbappe had the chance to rescue Real Madrid from defeat deep into stoppage time, but Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles saved his penalty to secure a 1-0 victory for the hosts.

The loss ended Madrid’s perfect start to La Liga under Jose Mourinho, who began his second spell in charge with three wins. Betis struck nine minutes from time when Troy Parrott fired in the rebound after Thibaut Courtois had denied Nelson Deossa’s header.

Madrid had earlier come close through Vinicius Junior, who hit the post from Arda Guler’s pass. Mbappe also saw two efforts blocked by Natan and Marc Bartra. Carlos Espi appeared to equalise with an acrobatic finish from a Vinicius cross, but officials ruled the goal offside.

Mbappe then clipped the crossbar before earning a late penalty after Natan’s challenge on Vinicius. Valles kept out the kick, giving Betis a memorable win and lifting them level with Madrid on nine points from four matches ahead of their return to the Champions League.
