According to security camera footage from a nearby business, the officer identified himself and rapidly drew his weapon. He began firing at the assailants. One suspect, wearing a gray sweatshirt, cap, and black pants, was hit and fell a short distance away after attempting to flee. The other suspect, dressed entirely in black and hooded, escaped along with a third individual who remained in the getaway vehicle.

After the immediate threat passed, the officer's family, including a woman with a baby and two other children, emerged from the car and sought refuge in a local establishment.
