La Paz: Representative of Company That Built Gastroenterological Institute Apprehended

Authorities in La Paz have arrested a representative of Makiber S.A., the company responsible for constructing the Gastroenterological Institute. The apprehension occurred on Tuesday as the individual was providing an informative statement to the Public Ministry regarding alleged damages stemming from a landslide at the facility.

The representative was notified of an arrest warrant while at the Public Ministry and subsequently transferred to the Special Force to Combat Crime (Felcc) facilities. The individual declined to comment to the media about the ongoing investigation into the structural problems plaguing the institute, which is located on Zabaleta Avenue.

Problems at the Gastroenterological Institute were first reported in late 2025. An inspection by the Chamber of Deputies' Education and Health Commission revealed significant damage to various parts of the infrastructure. The hospital complex, built with an investment exceeding 700 million Bolivianos, saw its construction span the tenures of Evo Morales and Luis Arce. Although provisionally delivered in 2024, constant delays have postponed its final handover.
