Lack of Proper Netball Courts a Major Issue for Netball Fiji's Olympic Aspirations

The shortage of quality netball courts across Fiji presents a major hurdle for Netball Fiji as it pursues its long-term ambition of qualifying for the 2032 Olympic Games. Alumeci Sachs, secretary of the Netball Fiji Transition Oversight Committee, highlighted the critical lack of facilities, particularly in the Northern Division and the maritime islands.

Associations in these regions have little to no access to proper netball courts, creating a substantial obstacle to developing the sport at the grassroots level. Sachs emphasized that providing adequate netball facilities outside Viti Levu is a key aspiration, believing it could attract more young people to the sport.

"We call on the government for the day to look into this. We have spoken with our associations across the country and the lack of proper netball courts is the biggest issue for them," Sachs stated. She is urging the Fijian government to provide support in this specific area as preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games begin.

Developing infrastructure for netball is seen as crucial for nurturing talent and increasing participation, especially in remote areas. The committee's appeal underscores the need for government investment to ensure equitable access to sports facilities and to bolster Fiji's chances in international competitions.
