Lagos Island LG reconstructs roads, disburses N100m business grants

The Lagos Island Local Government has marked its first year in office by completing four road reconstruction projects and distributing N100 million in grants to local businesses and entrepreneurs. The council chairman, Taiwo Oyekan, highlighted these achievements in a stewardship report, detailing improvements aimed at boosting infrastructure and economic activity.

Completed road projects include Onikoyi Street, Enu Owa Street, Kosoko Street, and Oja Oba Road. Construction continues on Issa Williams Street and Tajudeen Olusi Street. The administration is also renovating the old council secretariat and rebuilding the Gbobaniyi Fish Market.

Beyond infrastructure, the council provided N100 million in grants to small and medium-sized enterprises, artisans, and young entrepreneurs. Vocational equipment, such as industrial sewing machines and grinding machines, was distributed to foster self-employment. The local government also reported interventions in education, including free school bus services and educational materials for indigent students, alongside health sector initiatives like an insurance scheme for the elderly and vulnerable, and a renovated primary healthcare center.

Environmental sanitation was strengthened with the acquisition of a refuse truck and waste collection tricycles, coupled with drainage desilting to mitigate flooding. The council also emphasized monthly security meetings, town hall engagements, and support for cultural preservation. Future projects include reconstructing St. Patrick Primary School and Agarawu Primary Healthcare Centre, building new roads, establishing a mini fire station, and expanding financial aid programs.
