Lagos reviews Mainland Hospital readiness amid Ebola outbreak in Congo

Lagos health officials have inspected Mainland Hospital in Yaba, the state’s infectious disease facility, as they prepare for possible Ebola cases linked to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi said the assessment examined the hospital’s emergency operations centre, laboratory equipment, oxygen supply, triage and isolation areas, and external works. The review also identified maintenance needs in the emergency centre, biobank, pharmacy, catering facilities, and drainage networks.

Abayomi said the Ministry of Health was preparing for “any eventualities” and seeking to maintain the hospital’s operational readiness and surge capacity. He said the work formed part of efforts to strengthen Lagos’ public health safeguards.

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC was declared on May 15, 2026. More than 5,600 confirmed cases and over 2,700 deaths have been reported. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo species, for which the account says there are no vaccines or treatments. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appealed for $1.1 billion to fully fund the response plan.
