Lagos Taskforce Seizes 66 Motorcycles on Island for Violating Regulations

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) has confiscated 66 commercial motorcycles, commonly known as "okadas," for flouting the state's transport regulations. CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Taskforce, announced the seizure on Tuesday, stating the operation occurred on Monday across various parts of Lagos Island.

The enforcement aimed to curb illegal motorcycle operations and activities deemed a nuisance and security threat. Operators were found riding on restricted routes, causing disruptions for other road users. "During the operation, 66 commercial motorcycles were impounded, while normalcy was restored in the affected areas," Akerele stated.

The Taskforce is intensifying intelligence gathering and operations to eliminate illegal okada activities on prohibited routes, including highways and bridges. Akerele warned that future operations would also target passengers who violate the law. Impounded motorcycles will be forfeited to the state government through the courts, in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. The agency is committed to sustained enforcement until full compliance is achieved.
