Police order arrest, prosecution of traffic offenders in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has issued a directive for the immediate enforcement of traffic laws across the state, ordering officers to arrest and prosecute motorists who violate regulations. This action follows a noticeable increase in the disregard for traffic rules, which has led to severe traffic congestion, disrupted movement, road crashes, fatalities, and property damage.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the immediate enforcement of all existing traffic laws and regulations across the State following the rampant disregard for traffic regulations by motorists, which has resulted in avoidable gridlock, disruption of traffic flow, road crashes, loss of lives and destruction of property.

Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, announced the directive, aligning with the Inspector-General of Police's nationwide push to restore order on Nigerian roads and ensure the safety of lives and property. The command's spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Legal Officer, and the State Traffic Officer are tasked with ensuring professional enforcement and the prosecution of offenders according to existing laws.

The directive is in line with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, directive on the nationwide enforcement of traffic laws to restore order on Nigerian roads and safeguard lives and property.

CP Giwa stressed that the enforcement is crucial for reducing congestion, preventing accidents, and ensuring the free flow of traffic. He urged all motorists, including police officers and other security personnel, to familiarize themselves with and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to avoid arrest and prosecution.
