Lai Ching-te gifts U.S. delegation defense-themed items ahead of Han Kuang drills

President Lai Ching-te welcomed a bipartisan U.S. House delegation, led by Rep. Young Kim, to Taiwan, emphasizing the island's commitment to defense autonomy. Lai presented two unique gifts: a special edition of I-Mei Choco Puffs co-branded with the Ministry of National Defense and a limited-edition patch for the upcoming Han Kuang military exercises.

These gifts prominently feature Taiwan's newly acquired military capabilities, including the M1A2T tank, HIMARS rocket system, and Altius-600M attack drone. The items serve as a tangible representation of Taiwan's defense modernization efforts, aligning with U.S. expectations and support for Taiwan's self-defense capabilities. The Han Kuang exercises, scheduled from August 5 to 14, are Taiwan's most significant military drills.

During the meeting, Lai expressed hope for continued U.S.-Taiwan cooperation in building secure and trustworthy supply chains. Rep. Kim stressed the urgency of passing legislation for unmanned aerial vehicles. Wu Ssu-chih, an assistant professor at Taipei University of Marine Technology, noted that the delegation's visit at this critical juncture demonstrates U.S. endorsement of Taiwan's "peace through strength" strategy.

Beyond the defense-focused gifts, Lai also offered Taiwanese snacks like pineapple cakes, dried fruits, and nougat to the delegation, showcasing Taiwan's local flavors.
