Lam Dong declares emergency in residential area due to landslide risk

Authorities in Vietnam's Lam Dong province have declared an emergency in the Dung K'No 5 village, located in Dam Rong 4 commune, as landslides pose a severe threat to residents. The provincial People's Committee announced the decision, citing the complex and dangerous development of the situation that endangers both lives and property.

The affected area includes a steep slope where 15 households, comprising about 70 people, reside. This section of the hillside, characterized by high soil banks ranging from 30 to 50 meters and slopes between 45 to 60 degrees, has experienced average slips of 1 to 3.5 meters. The landslide debris has reached the edge of homes and blocked drainage ditches behind them. Similar erosion and landslides have also occurred on the opposite slope, impacting the rear structures of 15 other households.

These landslides are not entirely new, with some areas showing signs of slippage since 2025 and new occurrences reported in 2026. The risk is considered high, particularly with the potential for further slides during heavy rainfall. Previous reinforcement work in 2020 and 2022 has not fully stabilized the hillside, leaving the area vulnerable.

In response to the escalating danger, provincial leaders have deemed the situation alarming. To protect the residents, urgent measures are being implemented. Local authorities are tasked with posting warning signs, stationing guards, and guiding residents away from hazardous zones. The commune is also actively encouraging and, if necessary, compelling the relocation of residents from unsafe locations. The Lam Dong Department of Finance has been directed to allocate necessary funds promptly for emergency response and disaster recovery efforts.
