Landslide Damages Home in Colón, Panama, Following Heavy Rains; Nearby Families Evacuated

A landslide triggered by recent heavy rainfall has caused significant damage to a home in the El Valle community, Limón, in Panama's Colón province. The residence, owned by the Ortega family, sustained considerable damage, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

Units from the Fire Department, National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), and the local Communal Board were dispatched to the scene to provide assistance to the affected family. As a safety measure, two neighboring families living close to the impacted house were evacuated due to the ongoing risk of additional landslides.

Rafael, the homeowner, described the devastating impact of the landslide, stating that a portion of his house was lost. He appealed to the authorities for support, emphasizing the material losses incurred. Ilsa Ortega, a family member, confirmed that the rear of the house was the most severely affected part.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the area as rainfall persists across various parts of the country. Sinaproc and IMPHA have issued a vigilance alert until July 6, urging residents to take extreme preventive measures in anticipation of more precipitation. The situation underscores the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events and the importance of timely emergency response and precautionary evacuations.
