Landslide Halts Traffic to Bocas del Toro

A significant landslide in the Willie Mazu sector of Chiriquí Grande has completely halted traffic on the vital route connecting to the province of Bocas del Toro. The incident, which occurred around 11:00 AM on Saturday, has left hundreds of travelers stranded in both directions for more than seven hours.

The debris has partially covered the roadway, forcing authorities to implement a precautionary closure. Long queues of vehicles have formed, with many passengers waiting inside their cars or along the roadside, uncertain of when they will be able to proceed.

Teams from the Ministry of Public Works, equipped with heavy machinery, are on-site, collaborating with the Fire Department, the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), and the National Police. Their primary focus is the removal of the fallen material. However, operations are proceeding with extreme caution due to the saturated ground, which heightens the risk of additional slides.

Despite a temporary lull, authorities report that rain has begun to fall again, potentially complicating the clearing efforts. SINAPROC has urged drivers and individuals in the area to remain vigilant and heed official communications. While work continues uninterrupted to reopen the road as soon as possible, no estimated time for its restoration has been provided. Authorities are requesting patience from those affected as the cleanup and stabilization work progresses.
