Landslide Warnings Issued in Rangamati Amid Heavy Rainfall

Authorities in Bangladesh's Rangamati district have issued urgent landslide warnings and are urging residents in vulnerable hillside areas to relocate to safety. The warnings come in response to persistent rainfall that began yesterday, raising fears of potential landslides.

Officials from various local government bodies, including the Assistant Commissioner (Land) office, Fire Service, and Rangamati Municipality, have been conducting public awareness campaigns. Using loudspeakers, they are alerting residents in at-risk neighborhoods such as Rajmoni Para, Shimultoli, Rupnagar, and the Loknath Mandir area to evacuate.

Authorities fear landslides if rainfall continues and have kept shelters ready, although no one has taken refuge there so far.

The district administration has prepared 41 shelters across Rangamati, with 11 located within the municipality itself. These shelters are intended for the thousands of residents living in over 100 identified landslide-prone zones throughout the district's 10 upazilas, including 29 such areas within the municipal boundaries.

Mohammad Aslam Sarwar, Assistant Commissioner (Land), stated that authorities are concerned about the possibility of landslides if the rain continues. While shelters are ready, no residents have sought refuge in them yet. The Rangamati Weather Observatory reported 43.04 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to the report, with forecasts indicating continued rain for the next few days.
