Langkat Regent Arrested in KPK Sting Operation

Syah Afandin, the Regent of Langkat in North Sumatra, has been arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in a sting operation conducted on Thursday. He is being flown to Jakarta for further investigation.

The KPK apprehended a total of seven individuals during the operation. Among those arrested were one civil servant from Langkat Regency and five individuals from the private sector. The operation is reportedly linked to alleged bribery concerning projects within the Langkat Regency's Education and Public Housing departments.

On this afternoon, one of them, namely the Regent of Langkat, was brought to Jakarta to undergo further examination.

During the operation, KPK investigators seized evidence including hundreds of millions of rupiah in cash. This money is believed to represent project fees paid by private parties to the Regent. The sting operation took place across three locations: Langkat, Binjai, and Medan.

KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that investigators will further examine potential additional instances of gratification, bribery, or extortion by the Regent or other state officials in the Langkat region. The arrested individuals include Afandin, the civil servant, and the five private sector representatives.
