Late Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu remembered as 'fierce but humane'

Former Indonesian Minister of Defense Agum Gumelar paid tribute to the late Ryamizard Ryacudu, describing him as a "fierce but humane" figure during a funeral service at the Ministry of Defense in Jakarta. Ryacudu served as the 22nd Minister of Defense for Indonesia from 2014 to 2019.

"He was a firm officer, a high-ranking officer with a firm stance. A firm stance but humane. Although his face looked fierce, he was humane," Gumelar told reporters, reflecting on his impression of the late minister. Gumelar added that Ryacudu was a "very authoritative senior," sharing his personal knowledge of the former minister.

Gumelar also conveyed his condolences and urged attendees to pray for Ryacudu's soul to be accepted by the Almighty. He mentioned that his last meeting with Ryacudu was several months prior, during which the former minister was reportedly ill.

President Prabowo Subianto also attended the funeral service to pay his respects. He arrived at the Ministry of Defense accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Several other dignitaries, including former Minister of Defense Purnomo Yusgiantoro and Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Agus Subiyanto, were also present. Ryacudu's body was transported by a TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) hearse and arrived at the Ministry of Defense at 7:35 AM. The funeral service was followed by a military burial at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery.
