Late-summer heat brings highs of 33C, rain expected along South Korea’s east coast

South Korea will remain hot on Thursday, with daytime highs reaching 33C in some areas and rain expected along parts of the east coast and on Jeju Island.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast perceived temperatures of about 33C in Jeonnam, Gyeongnam and Jeju, warning residents to drink enough water and limit strenuous outdoor activity. Infants, older people and those with chronic illnesses were advised to reduce time outdoors.

Rain will continue through the night in Gangwon’s east coast and mountain areas. From morning through evening, showers are expected along the Gyeongbuk east coast, its northeastern mountains and Jeju. Busan, Ulsan and inland eastern Gyeongnam could also see rain from afternoon into the night.

Forecast rainfall ranges from 5 to 30 millimeters in Gangwon’s east coast and mountains, and 5 to 20 millimeters in parts of Busan, Ulsan, eastern Gyeongnam, the Gyeongbuk coast, Ulleungdo, Dokdo and Jeju.

Afternoon and evening showers may affect southeastern Chungcheong, Chungbuk, the Jeolla region and inland areas of Gyeongsang. Rainfall could reach 5 to 40 millimeters in Gwangju and Jeonnam, and 5 to 40 millimeters in inland Gyeongnam.

Rain and showers may sharply reduce visibility and make roads slippery. Some areas could experience gusts, thunder and lightning, with rainfall varying widely even within the same region. Seoul, Incheon and Suwon are forecast to reach 31C, Gwangju 33C, Busan 31C and Jeju 31C. Fine dust levels are expected to remain “good” nationwide.
