Latvia-Belarus Border Crossing Closed, Trucks Stranded

Several trucks are stranded at the Pāternieki border crossing between Latvia and Belarus due to technical disruptions in the information systems, rendering border control impossible. The closure has left drivers unable to re-register their documents, forcing them to seek alternative routes, primarily in Lithuania.

On weekends, truck drivers do not have the opportunity to re-register documents, so they wait and cannot use other border control points.

Officials have not specified the exact number of stranded drivers, but acknowledged that those with the possibility are attempting to use other border control points. The duration of the Pāternieki crossing's closure remains uncertain. This situation adds to existing border tensions, as Latvia has extended enhanced border security measures along its frontier with Belarus until the end of the year.

Currently, the Latvian-Belarusian border crossing point is closed, and it is unknown when it can be opened.

The heightened security regime, particularly in the Ludza, Krāslava, Augšdaugava regions, and the cities of Daugavpils and Rēzekne, is a response to an increased flow of illegal migrants originating from Belarus. Last year, the State Border Guard prevented over 12,000 attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border. While most attempts were thwarted, 31 individuals were allowed entry on humanitarian grounds. In 2024, 5,388 people have been deterred from crossing illegally, with 26 admitted for humanitarian reasons.
