Latvia's PM-Nominee Kulbergs to Name Cabinet Candidates Tuesday

Latvia's Prime Minister-nominee Andris Kulbergs is set to reveal his proposed cabinet candidates on Tuesday, May 26, following intensive coalition negotiations. The distribution of ministerial responsibilities has been agreed upon by potential coalition partners, paving the way for a parliamentary vote on the new government. President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Kulbergs to discuss the progress of government formation talks. Rinkēvičs indicated that Kulbergs had briefed him on the draft government declaration, the allocation of portfolios, and the overall coalition framework. The President expressed optimism that significant progress has been made, allowing Kulbergs to move forward with forming the government and enabling the Saeima to decide on confidence in Kulbergs' leadership within the week. Kulbergs characterized the coalition-building process as a demonstration that "the impossible is possible," highlighting the agreement reached on the division of responsibilities. He stressed that this distribution is "collegial" and avoids built-in tensions, which are unnecessary during this period. This model, he believes, will ensure stable coalition work without disputes. He noted that at one point, actions were not collegial, a situation that must not continue, and stated that this understanding had been reached. He also mentioned that potential ministers should not face issues with state secret clearances, a point President Rinkēvičs underscored as crucial for a government to be decisive.
