Latvian Parties Debate Security, Environment, and Healthcare Ahead of Elections

As Latvia approaches parliamentary elections, political parties are vying for voter attention, particularly among the youth, by addressing critical issues such as national security, economic stability, and the country's role in Europe.

The ongoing war in Ukraine and geopolitical tensions have elevated security to a paramount concern. Parties are responding with diverse proposals, ranging from specific defense budget allocations to debates on compulsory military service. "Suverēnā vara/Apvienība Jaunlatvieši" and "Stabilitātei!" suggest abandoning mandatory defense service, a move that raises questions about long-term defense strategies given the regional instability. The issue of migration, exacerbated by Belarus's hybrid warfare tactics, also remains a significant focus, with parties pledging to strengthen eastern border defenses.

Environmental and climate change issues are also prominent, reflecting the priorities of younger voters. However, the approaches vary significantly. Some parties offer general commitments, while others, like "Latvia pirmajā vietā," propose halting wind farm construction if residents object, potentially alienating environmentally conscious youth. "Progresīvie" and "Jaunā Vienotība" appear to emphasize environmental and climate issues more actively, though their specific proposals may differ from youth expectations.

Healthcare remains a complex and perennial challenge, marked by funding shortages and long patient waiting lists. All parties acknowledge the need to increase the healthcare budget, with "Zaļo un Zemnieku savienība" and "Jaunā Vienotība" even specifying target figures. This offers voters a clearer choice between concrete financial commitments and more general promises, as parties generally recognize the core problems in healthcare and express a strong resolve to address them.
