Launceston Council Plans $15-25 Million Bus Stop Upgrade Amid Anti-Social Behavior Concerns

Launceston's city center is grappling with persistent anti-social behavior centered around its main bus stops, prompting the City Council to consider a significant upgrade project. Business owners along St John Street have long voiced concerns about disturbances, which they say are impacting their operations and deterring customers.

Massage shop manager Jim Ji described the noise from rowdy passengers as detrimental to his business, noting that customers seeking a relaxing experience are often disturbed. Capri Launceston director Heidi Ellen reported having to close her doors twice in a week due to staff feeling unsafe because of behavior outside the store. She stated that customers have expressed fear about entering, particularly in the afternoons, and that the situation is "getting out of hand."

In response, the Launceston City Council has advertised a tender for a "nation-first Step + Ride" facility, with an indicative construction budget of $15-25 million. This project aims to replace the current bus interchange with a modern transport hub designed for current and future mobility needs. The concept includes facilities for parking bikes and scooters, and integration with ride-share services, alongside traditional bus transport.

We definitely have customers talking about how they're afraid to come into our store, especially from about 2pm onwards. It's getting out of hand.

However, some business owners remain skeptical about the proposed solution. They question whether such a substantial investment will effectively tackle the root causes of the anti-social behavior. Despite the council's efforts, including the deployment of security guards since March, the problems persist, leaving business owners uncertain if the ambitious redevelopment plan will bring the desired improvements.
