Lauryn Hill, Wyclef and Giggs among surprise guests at Jay-Z's long-awaited UK show

Jay-Z turned his first solo headline show in the United Kingdom in more than a decade into a celebration of hip-hop history, bringing Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and London rapper Giggs onto the stage in London.

The US rapper performed for more than two hours at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, the first of two London shows on his Jay-Z 30 tour. The tour marks 30 years since the release of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and reflects on the career that followed. His set included 99 Problems, Empire State of Mind, Dead Presidents II, Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) and Where I’m From.

Fans had hoped Beyoncé might appear, as she did at two of Jay-Z’s three New York shows this summer. Instead, he referred to a “young lady’s birthday” and asked the crowd to sing Happy Birthday to Beyoncé, who watched from a private box. Sparkler-like fireworks rose over the stadium as the audience celebrated her 45th birthday.

Jay-Z’s reflective mood surfaced again when he told fans who had supported him from the beginning that “music saved my life.” He then performed songs connected to his upbringing in Brooklyn’s Marcy housing projects before raising the energy with No Church in the Wild, backed by fiery pyrotechnics. He retained his chorus on the song but removed his own verses from the original collaboration with Ye, also known as Kanye West.

DJ Khaled made a brief appearance while Jay-Z changed, but Giggs drew one of the biggest reactions. Looking overwhelmed, he performed Talkin Da Hardest with Jay-Z. Hill and Wyclef Jean then reunited as the Fugees for Ready or Not, Killing Me Softly With His Song and Fu-Gee-La. Jay-Z recalled supporting the group on a European tour, making the reunion a full-circle moment. He ended with Public Service Announcement (Interlude) and Numb/Encore, calling it a “legendary night” he would “never forget.”
