Lawan applauds Tinubu's expansion of army to 12 divisions

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has lauded President Bola Tinubu's decision to expand the Nigerian Army to 12 divisions and approve the recruitment of 28,000 young Nigerians.

Lawan, who chairs the Senate Committee on Defence, described the expansion and recruitment as strategic moves that will bolster Nigeria's security framework and enhance the military's ability to address emerging threats. He believes the creation of additional divisions will shorten response times to security challenges, particularly in remote areas, and that a stronger military structure will accelerate efforts to combat insurgency and other security issues.

"The asymmetric nature of modern warfare requires not just superior firepower, but superior manpower, strategic spread and operational agility," Lawan stated in a personal statement released Wednesday. "With this expansion, the Commander-in-Chief has demonstrated that he is not just a listening leader, but a thinking leader."

He further noted that the recruitment of 28,000 young individuals will not only strengthen national defense but also create employment opportunities, potentially reducing youth vulnerability to crime and extremism. Lawan emphasized that these security sector reforms align with the Tinubu administration's "Renewed Hope Agenda" and stressed the importance of sustained efforts to secure the country.
