Lawmaker urges Taiwan's Han Kuo-yu to learn from predecessor Wang Jin-pyng on national interest

Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu's recent display of frustration with opposition parties delaying the budget has drawn a call from a ruling party legislator to emulate his predecessor, Wang Jin-pyng, and prioritize national interests over party lines.

The position of legislative speaker should transcend party lines. While one has a party affiliation, one's actions should be based on the interests of the nation and the people.

DPP legislator Chiu Chih-wei suggested that Han, who has been perceived by some as overly deferential to the Kuomintang caucus, should learn from Wang's tenure. Chiu described Wang as a "fair judge" who maintained neutrality, ensuring legislative proceedings and budget reviews proceeded smoothly without favoring any party. He recalled Wang's condition for reviewing the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement, demanding a supervisory regulation first, to prevent unconstitutional bills from passing.

Chiu criticized the current legislative paralysis, attributing it to the KMT and TPP caucuses' obstructionism and a perceived lack of mediation by the speaker. He expressed hope that Han's recent outburst was not a fleeting moment but a genuine concern for national interests, urging him to act with integrity and transcend party affiliation to normalize parliamentary operations. Chiu stated that Han's past leniency had allowed the opposition to paralyze the government.

"I hope Han's scolding of Fu Kun-chi is effective and for the sake of national interest and the people's welfare," Chiu said, urging Han to maintain neutrality and a supreme role above party politics. He concluded that Wang's approach, which prioritized national interests, was far superior to Han's current performance.
