Lawmakers demand probe into Osun election violence, security deployment

A group of Nigerian lawmakers, operating as the Save Democracy Group (SDG), has called for a thorough investigation into the violence and fatalities that marred the Osun State Governorship Election. The representatives also raised concerns about the significant security resources deployed for the election, questioning the federal government's decision to allocate such extensive resources to Osun while other parts of the country grapple with persistent terrorist and bandit attacks.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the lawmakers emphasized that the loss of Nigerian lives should not be an acceptable consequence of political competition. They cited official police confirmation of 30 suspected politically motivated killings being investigated and documented incidents by civil society organizations, which recorded 56 violent events and 14 fatalities preceding the poll. The violence reportedly continued until shortly before election day, with a resident killed and another injured in a shooting incident on August 13, two days before the vote.

The group also urged an investigation into comments allegedly made by Senator Francis Fadahunsi, which were interpreted as inciting violence against members of the Accord Party. While the senator has denied inciting violence, the lawmakers stated that his denial should not preclude an independent investigation into his remarks. They stressed the responsibility of political leaders to understand the potential deadly consequences of their words in volatile environments.

The lawmakers' demands underscore a broader concern about electoral integrity and security in Nigeria, highlighting the tension between resource allocation for elections and the ongoing challenges of insecurity across the nation.
